1990s
1999- Chris Buckley, Happy Birthday, Barbara!
At dinner, campers came in to the dining hall to find it decorated with balloons and a big Happy Birthday Barbara sign. Jon Mann called Barbara to the fireplace for the traditional happy birthday song and they were soon joined by the kitchen staff, carrying a table with a sheet cake on top. At the end of the song, Chris, a first year counselor and advisor, jumped through the fake cake.
1998- "Whitey" Winter, Mess Hall Break
While campers were lining up on the parade ground for morning flag raising, a weird drumming sound could be heard coming from the junior baseball field. Despite Stu’s protestations, everyone started to trickle and then run over to the field where they discovered Whitey, the color war commissioner, flanked by drumming advisors and Billy Rubenstein and Jordy Brenner throwing orange and black streamers from the dining hall roof.
1997- "Whitey" and The Helicopter
While standing waiting for the flag lowering, the distant rumble of a helicopter came towards the camp. Slowly getting louder and louder until it was over campers heads. Then black and orange streamers starting flying from the helicopter at all of the campers until the copter made its decent onto the junior baseball field. Stepping from the helicopter was Whitey with a Mohawk, one side of his head painted orange and the other black.
1996- Randy Biegelman, Summer Olympics
The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Atlanta had been the day before. The campers were disappointed when Stu Foster announced they could not watch it live but would be able to see a tape of it the next day. Everyone was in the Playhouse, chanting “USA, USA” when they saw the US team walking into the Olympic stadium. Suddenly, the video cut to a shirtless Randy running around inside an empty Playhouse waving an American flag. The chants switched from USA to Color War as soon as the campers saw the advisors jump out from behind the screen.
1993- Stu Foster, Drama Fight
Toward the end of the show, some seniors were performing a skit which included a few obscenities that Stu found objectionable. Stu raised his voice at them and Chrissy yelled back, defending them. Stu responded “So what do you want to do about it?” And, Chrissy answered “Why don’t we break Color War!”
1995-Randy Biegelman, Lodge '95 Fake out
The Lodge had tried several fake breaks, none of which were very good. Right before flag lowering, Randy helped paint them all for yet another one. As soon as they ran into the parade ground, Stu started blowing his whistle, chewing them out and blaming Jon Mann for setting it up. Stu then ushered the Lodge straight to the shower house and as soon as they walked in, the advisors came sprinting out.
1994- Kerry, Cookout
During a cookout, Kerry could be seen on the climbing wall, repairing some holds, when she appeared to fall and was left dangling, hanging by her harness. Doc Rick ran over and called for a van to help move her. As the van drove past the field heading to the infirmary, with all eyes glued, the van suddenly stopped and the advisors piled out.
1992- Terry Landry, Kitchen Fury
On three or four separate occasions, Stu had sent the campers into the dining hall after flag lowering, only to send them back out to the parade grounds to try again when they wouldn’t be quiet when he rang the bell. Having to use this tactic once again, Stu was taking a particularly long time talking to the campers about their behavior. Just as he was about to send everyone back in, Terry came storming out, yelling at Stu that the dinner was getting cold and, smacking Stu's clipboard out of his hand to cue the advisors.
1991- The Smashed Guitar, Howie Hoffman
As evening assembly was about to begin, Howie was on a bench singing Beatles songs with a bunch of campers and counselors, strumming his beloved guitar. Stu, anxious to get started, asked him to stop, but Howie kept playing. After several more requests, Stu reached over several rows of campers, grabbed the neck of Howie's guitar and smashed it against a tree. He then smiled and announced that "color war has just broken." PS It wasn’t Howie’s real guitar.
